Marla and I began new chapter in our lives. On March 29th, 2018, I retired from manufacturing, after 39 years with Mechanical Devices Company, here in Bloomington Illinois.
Over those 39 years, I gained considerable knowledge in the manufacturing processes, specific to machining, heat treating, plating, painting, and welding, as well as general manufacturing practices, material requirements planning, purchasing, supply chain logistics, and problem solving methodology, such as 6 Sigma. "Just In Time/Lean" manufacturing.
However, NOW THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!! I'm a man of.....let's say many talents. Marla is still employed, so, I am the 'house boy' at our home. You know, "chief cook and bottle washer" kind of thing. It's working well so far. And I really don't miss the factory as much as I thought I might.
I guess its not really the factory or the people that I don't miss, It's the stress of the "JIT" environment
that part I don't miss!
Marla would like to work to age 70. She might make it, if her hands don't totally crap out on her before then. The discomfort she experiences now is slowly worsening. Anyway, I've suggested to her that she give herself another 'no work' day for her 67 birthday. Cross off Friday's, and that would give her a three day work week, Tues.,Wed., and Thurs. We'll see where that goes..
TO BE CONTINUED.
